BMW engines equipped with Valvetronic achieve 10-15% gains in fuel efficiency, while delivering similar increases in horsepower. This highly advanced technology replaces the conventional throttle butterfly with an electrical mechanism that controls the amount of lift of the individual intake valves on each cylinder. The performance of the engine is more efficient and immediate, thanks to the elimination of the pumping losses and air-flow disturbance caused by a conventional throttle butterfly. Instead, air can flow through the intake manifold freely, and Valvetronic precisely regulates the quantity of air entering the cylinders. In addition to providing fuel savings, Valvetronic improves cold start behaviour, lowers exhaust emissions and provides smoother, more immediate power.

Double-VANOS.

Better performance, fewer emissions.

The Double-VANOS system continuously adjusts the camshaft positions for both the intake and the exhaust valves to optimize engine breathing. This results in significantly higher torque at low engine speeds and more power at higher engine speeds. At lower engine speeds, the position of the camshaft is moved so the valves are opened later, as this improves idling quality and smooth power development. As the engine speed increases, the valves are opened earlier: this enhances torque, reduces fuel consumption and lowers emissions. At high engine speeds, the valves are opened later to allow full power delivery. Double-VANOS also controls the amount of exhaust that is re-circulated into the intake manifold, enhancing fuel efficiency.

BMW uses lightweight materials such as aluminum and magnesium engines, carbon fibre roofs, and aluminum chassis, wherever possible. For example, our front and rear axles are almost entirely composed of aluminum, significantly reducing axle loads and making BMW's characteristic near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution possible. Because BMWs are lighter, they offer more dynamic acceleration, stable handling, and are more fuel efficient while delivering more driving pleasure.

High Precision Injection.

The core element of High Precision Injection technology is the piezo injector positioned between the valves and the spark plug. Inside the injector are multiple layers of piezo crystals which expand instantly when electricity passes through them.

This forces a dose of the fuel/air mix out the injector needle and through the outlet (which is no wider than a human hair) and into the combustion chamber under a pressure of 200 bar. The cone-shaped cloud, the size of a thumb nail, is precisely injected onto the spark and combusts with an excess of oxygen.

In contrast to conventional injection systems, BMW's High Precision Injection requires very little fuel and eliminates the waste caused by unburned fuel being sprayed on the walls of the combustion chamber. The results are a higher power output and an 8% reduction in fuel consumption.
