MAXIMIZES THE BENEFITS.

The efficiency of the BMW X5.

There are several reasons for the power and efficiency of the BMW X5: fuel-saving gasoline and diesel engines, sophisticated aerodynamics – and a whole range of other BMW EfficientDynamics measures.

Maximum performance for minimumm fuel consumption.

Whether the goal is maximum performance or minimum fuel consumption – for us, the focus is always on delivering quintessential BMW driving pleasure. BMW EfficientDynamics is the strategy developed by BMW to minimize fuel consumption and emissions while simultaneously increasing dynamics and driving pleasure. It is a comprehensive technology package that includes the drive train, energy management and the vehicle concept – and is standard in every BMW. The new generation of gasoline and diesel engines in the BMW TwinPower Turbo family is responsible for the improved performance and lower fuel consumption. Optimized aerodynamics, along with intelligent lightweight construction, contribute to increased efficiency. The latter lowers the weight while at the same time increasing the car's rigidity. The BMW concept of intelligent lightweight construction involves deploying the right material in the right place, because every material has its specific strengths. This is a demonstration of the impressive innovation leadership at BMW, the only major car manufacturer that relies on ultralight and highly rigid carbon fibre (CFRP) as a key material. BMW also focuses on forward-thinking drive train concepts such as the BMW eDrive technology with a 100 % electric drive train and plug-in hybrids.

ECO PRO MODE.

As soon as you switch to the ECO PRO Mode, everything is geared towards greater efficiency and depending on your individual driving style, this results in a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 20 per cent (according to an internal BMW fuel consumption study). Another five per cent can be saved by the additional functions of coasting, preview assistant and ECO PRO Route. This mode optimizes accelerator and transmission response as well as shift points, and intelligently adapts the heating/air conditioning strategy. The Control Display shows you which EfficientDynamics technologies are currently lowering your fuel consumption. You’ll also receive ECO PRO tips that relate to your current driving situation to help you boost efficiency even further. Another feature of the ECO PRO mode is the coasting function: If no driving power is required within a speed range of 50 km/h to 160 km/h, the system disconnects the engine and the car coasts. The preview assistant in conjunction with Navigation System Professional is an especially innovative highlight of ECO PRO mode. Based on navigation data, it detects bends, built-up areas, roundabouts, T-junctions, speed limits and motorway exits along the route and is able to give you tips in advance to enable you to reduce speed early on. ECO PRO mode also includes ECO PRO Route which combines with the new generation of Navigation system Professional to draw on various parameters such as individual driving style as well as the current traffic situation and road conditions to calculate the most fuel-efficient route. The on-board computer displays your bonus mileage, in other words how many additional kilometres you have gained from using ECO PRO mode.

AERODYNAMICS.

The entire vehicle design is testament to the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy. The optimized, aerodynamic front bumper and underbody feature innovative improvements that reduce air resistance and fuel consumption.

  • Air Curtain and Air Breather

The front bumper is a prominent design feature that embodies the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy. The integrated Air Curtain channels air through two vertical air inlets and along the front wheel arches. The accelerated air flow creates a kind of "curtain" on the outer side of the wheels. Then there’s the Air Breather, which channels the air flow at the front wheels. These innovative technologies reduce turbulence and air resistance, which in turn reduces fuel consumption.

  • Air vent control

The automatic air vent control uses a sensor to continuously assess the current cooling needs of the engine and opens or closes the radiator air vents in response. This optimizes aerodynamics and shortens the warm-up phase for reduced fuel consumption.

  • Rear spoiler and Air Blade

The rear spoiler at the roof edge and the Air Blades joined to it at the sides go together to form a highly efficient so-called "trailing edge". The precisely defined air flow at the rear reduces disruptive air swirl and the braking effect of negative pressure to a minimum.

ENGINE TECHNOLOGY.

The pioneering technologies in BMW engines have always been ahead of their time because they have been the core competency of BMW since 1917. The engines in the BMW X5 provide particularly impressive proof of this. With outstanding performance, spontaneous response and commendably smooth running, it meets the highest standards of driving comfort. The pioneering technologies in the BMW X5 engines already meet the strict EU6 emission norm.Another reason to look forward with confidence is BMW BluePerformance technology, which is standard in all diesel models. Thanks this technology, it has been possible to optimize the emissions response of diesel engines even further. In addition to the diesel particulate filter and oxidation catalytic converter, there is also an NOx catalyst storage which further reduces the level of nitric oxide in the exhaust gas. A further method of nitric oxide reduction is also used: the SCR catalytic converter (SCR = Selective Catalytic Reduction) with AdBlue Injection. A chemical reaction triggered by injection of the urea solution AdBlue greatly reduces nitric oxide emissions. In this way, you can be sure that you drive one of the cleanest diesel vehicles in the world with greatly reduced exhaust emissions.
