The Adaptive M suspension is set ten millimetres lower, further increasing the vehicle's full dynamic potential. The driver can adjust the driving characteristics via the Driving Experience Control to enable whichever driving style is most appealing at the time – from comfortable to extremely athletic. Whichever setting is chosen, the Adaptive M suspension's electrically controlled dampers calibrate to suit the road conditions within fractions of a second. The system also uses numerous sensors that measure wheel vibrations, as well as vehicle speed, in order to achieve optimal damping and vehicle safety.
COMFORT mode can be selected for relaxed travelling. SPORT mode enables a distinctly athletic suspension setting with noticeably tighter damper settings. For extremely dynamic driving, SPORT+ mode is the best choice: the DTC function (Dynamic Traction Control) is activated, which allows more wheel-slip on the drive wheels, for athletic driving that pushes the limits of the car's dynamics. However, the DSC function is not completely disabled; rather it intervenes much later – within the limits of what is physically possible and safe – in order to stabilize the vehicle.

TwinPower Turbo


BMW TwinPower Turbo technology makes up the powerful heart of the BMW 3 Series. The modern and lively 2.0-litre engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology is the strongest power unit in a new generation of 4-cylinder spark ignition engines, which are technologically derived from the award-winning 6-cylinder gasoline engine. As part of the BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy, they have been systematically geared towards enhanced driving dynamics while at the same reducing fuel consumption and emission figures. Also employed in the new BMW 3 Series is the established 2.0-litre BMW TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder diesel, which offers an undiminished high output but now performs even more cost-efficiently and with fewer emissions. The engine with aluminum composite crankcase sets standards in many respects and combines the latest generation of common rail direct injection with a turbocharger, including variable turbine geometry.


A question of the setting. With the Driving Experience Control of your BMW 3 Series Sedan set to SPORT Mode, the engine and driving dynamics react even more directly, allowing you an enhanced sports driving style. The SPORT Mode is activated using the standard-feature Driving Experience Control in the central console. Through a predefined setup and according to the equipment selected, it results in a considerably more sporting adjustment of the drive and suspension – compared with the standard settings. The engine responds more spontaneously. Thanks to the Steptronic transmission, the shift points exhibit considerably more sporting character. In combination with the Adaptive M suspension, the chassis has a far more athletic setting. If variable sports steering is chosen, the assistance from power steering is reduced, which ensures a more direct feeling of steering control.



Supreme driving comfort.

Supreme driving comfort while maintaining maximum handling, agility and accuracy. These requirements may seem to be almost mutually exclusive. And yet the chassis of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan solves the contradiction with ease. A substantial contribution to this comes from the sophisticated chassis technology with double-joint tension-strut front axle and five-arm rear axle, which provide perfect support for the successful concept with longitudinally mounted engine, rear-wheel drive, balanced axle load distribution and body with high torsional strength.

Perfectly tuned axle kinematics.

BMW particularly relies on lightweight chassis components, sophisticated and perfectly tuned axle kinematics together with a precise steering system, which – thanks to the rear-wheel drive – remains unaffected by drive factors. State-of-the-art control systems support the dynamic driving potential of the BMW 3 Series Sedan. With a wheelbase of 2,810 millimetres, a track width of 1,543 millimetres at the front and 1,583 millimetres at the rear, the BMW 3 Series Sedan has grown in terms of its dimensions. Combining the weight-optimized drive train and the lightweight construction concept of the body results in a perfect 50:50 axle load distribution. This ensures maximum driving dynamics and stability. As if that were not enough: the dynamic chassis characteristics of the BMW 3 Series Sedan can be increased even further with the optionally available Adaptive M suspension and by choosing SPORT Mode, which can be selected via the Driving Experience Control.



Traction, tracking stability and safety.

BMW xDrive enhances traction, tracking stability and safety. And particularly so when adverse conditions call for more power to be applied to the road. The BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system detects the first signs of any oversteering or understeering. Within a tenth of a second it distributes up to 100% of the engine power to the front or rear axle via the transmission and an electronically controlled multiple-plate clutch before returning to the normal 40:60 distribution ratio. With BMW xDrive each axle uses its traction to the maximum. Whether in tight bends, during hill starts, on slippery surfaces with rain or leaves as well as on snow-covered carriageways, the optimum amount of power reaches the road. Your BMW provides stable acceleration in every situation – even out of bends. With BMW xDrive your vehicle exploits the benefits of rear-wheel drive to the full: precise handling, optimum cornering and a clear separation between the engine and steering.




The most dynamic and comfortable way to save: the 8-speed Steptronic transmission not only ensures incredibly soft changes and reduces background noise at high speeds, it also significantly reduces fuel consumption. The transmission can be combined with all engines. Gear changes with the new 8-speed Steptronic transmission are swift and comfortable. The individual gears are finely graduated so that the change takes place with small rev intervals and the transmission process itself goes unnoticed. At the same time, the engine is always held at the performance level at which it can optimally use its strength and efficiency. It is assisted here by the newly developed and more efficient converter clutch. At high speeds, the additional gears reduce the number of revolutions, thus reducing fuel consumption and engine noise. Thanks to the 8-speed Steptronic transmission from BMW EfficientDynamics, it is now possible to actively boost performance in vehicles with the new Predictive Drive Train via the Driving Experience Control. In the Sport mode, the transmission management uses data from the navigation system to deliver a level of responsiveness that is even more dynamic and spontaneous based on route characteristics. As suggested by its name, the Comfort mode offers a comfort-oriented shift programme with fewer shifts. BMW supplies the optional 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission for an even more agile sensation of gear-changing and driving. In addition to faster gear changes, this additionally contains two paddle switches on the steering wheel and a shortened gear change lever, which makes an even more sporting style of driving possible. Launch Control provides extra dynamics: this motor sport-inspired function controls the start-up revs and enables maximum acceleration from standstill.


Sports driving dynamics meet maximum comfort: variable sports steering adapts the angle of the front wheels to the actual conditions so that the BMW 3 Series Sedan reacts more or less directly to the driver’s steering commands. The steering wheel movements required for large wheel angles have been reduced by up to 25 per cent. Parking and cornering thus become easier and more comfortable because the driver has to exert less effort. Handling qualities also benefit, such as when rapid evasive manoeuvres are required. In the case of smaller steering angles between zero and 100 degrees, the car displays accurate tracking and high stability on straight stretches while conducting steering movements with impressive precision. The steering ratio in each case is determined purely mechanically by a variable transmission for the steering rack.
