The design of the BMW 3 Series Sedan is systematically geared towards the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy. The aerodynamically optimized front bumper and the underbody, in particular, impress with their innovative new features that reduce drag and fuel consumption. Embodying the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy in a visible design feature is the front bumper of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan. The integrated Air Curtain guides the airstream along the front wheel housings via two vertical inlets. Once accelerated, the stream of air then forms a “curtain” around the outer sides of the wheels. This curtain reduces turbulence and drag, thus lowering fuel consumption.The smooth underbody lining and the engine compartment screening are further details that enable a significant enhancement in aerodynamics. Yet the new lining features not only bring a considerable gain in terms of aerodynamics, they also provide improved acoustic insulation and increased corrosion protection as practical benefits.


Until now, braking meant giving away energy. Brake Energy Regeneration now puts an end to this: when you brake, energy is recovered and the battery is loaded. As soon as you release the accelerator or apply the brake, the energy liberated is used to charge the battery. This decreases the load on the engine, reduces emissions and saves fuel. The targeted generation of electrical energy has yet another advantage: At full acceleration, the engine also has the propulsive force at its disposal that would otherwise be channelled off to charge the battery in conventional systems. The result is an increase in not only cost-efficiency but also driving fun.


As soon as you switch to the ECO PRO Mode, everything is geared towards greater efficiency and depending on your individual driving style, this results in a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 20 per cent (according to an internal BMW fuel consumption study). This mode optimises accelerator and transmission response as well as shift points, and intelligently adapts the heating/air conditioning strategy. The Control Display shows you which EfficientDynamics technologies are currently lowering your fuel consumption. You’ll also receive ECO PRO tips that relate to your current driving situation to help you boost efficiency even further. A further 5% can be saved by using the additional coasting function (only with Steptronic transmission), preview assistant and ECO PRO Route (both only with Navigation system Professional) and the Active Cruise Control in the ECO PRO Mode.

  • Coasting function

    The coasting function is a highlight of the ECO PRO Mode: if within a speed range of 50–160 km/h the driver takes his foot off the accelerator and does not brake, the system disconnects the engine and the car coasts – i.e. rolls without engine power.

  • Preview assistant

    The preview assistant, in conjunction with Navigation System Professional, is an especially innovative highlight of ECO PRO Mode. Based on navigation data, it detects bends, built-up areas, roundabouts, T-junctions, speed limits and motorway exits along the route and is able to give you tips in advance to enable you to reduce speed early on. The proactive driving assistant also efficiently controls the coasting function.

  • ECO PRO Route

    ECO PRO Mode also includes ECO PRO Route which combines with the new generation of Navigation System Professional to draw on various parameters such as individual driving style as well as the current traffic situation and road conditions to calculate the most fuel-efficient route.

  • Active Cruise Control in the ECO PRO Mode

    Active Cruise Control in the ECO PRO Mode regulates the speed and brakes when needed until the vehicle comes to a standstill. When the traffic situation has normalised vehicle is efficiently brought back to the desired speed.


Red lights, traffic jams, level crossings – in everyday driving situations there are many instances where the engine is idling, unnecessarily burning fuel. The standard-feature Automatic Start/Stop function of the BMW 3 Series Sedan switches off the engine automatically when the vehicle stops temporarily, as soon as the driver disengages the clutch for the manual transmission or operates the brake for Steptronic transmissions. However, intelligent electronics only deactivate the engine when no energy is needed by other loads and there is no adverse effect on your safety and travelling comfort.
So the engine remains active until the optimum running temperature has been attained or the required interior climate achieved. Depending on the type of transmission in the vehicle, when the engine has been switched off by the Automatic Start/Stop function, either releasing the brake or engaging the clutch will cause it to start up again in a fraction of a second. The result is less fuel consumption and fewer emissions.
